Lori's Story Hello my name is Lori. In March 2009, I had the gastric sleeve procedure. I came to this decision because I was in pretty poor health and overweight. I had high blood pressure, high cholesterol, my BMI was 46.5, I had bursitis problems in my hip and major feet problems and I was diabetic. Before my surgery I weighed in at 243 lbs. My life before the surgery was not the quality of life anyone should have to endure. I was unmotivated; I didn't have very much energy, I had a hard time walking and climbing up and down stairs, I lived with pain daily.

My husband would have to play with our children more than me because any real physical activity was hard on me and my body – my feet would hurt badly, I would limp for days. A family vacation or a trip to the amusement park or a festival wasn't always so fun for me because I missed going on rides with my children and husband because it was to hard for me to climb steps or stand in line for long periods of time. I was the person you would walk by and see sitting on the bench holding everyone else's stuff and taking pictures while they went and had fun.

At the time I didn't realize how much this really affected my children and husband. I would smile and tell them all to go have fun, I'll be here waiting, no problem, it's all good … but on the inside emotionally it would hurt. I thought I hid it well but I didn't. My kids knew it made me sad and it made them sad too.

Lori's Story Shopping was not a fun experience for me. It was difficult to find clothes that would fit or hide my weight and size. No one knew how this made me feel inside because for years I hid it from everyone. I had to bury my emotions all the time so no one would know just how miserable I was.

It was time to do something about it. Over the last 10 years I tried to lose weight on my own with diets; WeightWatchers®, Atkins, low carb trend diets, etc.

Yes, I would lose some weight but once I got off the plan the weight came back plus a few extra pounds. I needed help and I needed it now. This is when I started doing research on bariatric procedures online. My husband and I attended several orientations from several doctors and got information on all three bariatric procedures.

Do your research — get informed. It is very important to choose the right procedure for you.

I had the sleeve procedure and it was the best decision I could have made. It has completely changed my life because with the weight loss I regained my health and I got my life back. I really didn't know just how much my daily life was affected by me being overweight until after my surgery.

I am now 2 years out from surgery, I have lost 94 pounds and 72 inches off my body (6 feet!) I have more energy and motivation then I ever could have expected. My quality of life has excelled beyond my expectations. I can now do everything with my family. I made the commitment to a lifestyle change for the rest of my life. No more fad diets, no more unsuccessful results.

The bariatric procedure provided me a tool and with the combination of eating right and exercise and the lifestyle changes I have been extremely successful. I have only one regret — I should have done it sooner.
