Marisa's Story I'm in training for a 5K in November! 100 pounds and 10 dress sizes ago that would have never even been a dream, but now after surgery I feel like I can do anything!

I had my surgery a year ago, July 5, 2011. But my journey with Dr. Peterson, Cyndi and the entire staff at CHRISTUS Weight Loss Institute really began February 14, 2011. That was my first visit with Dr. Peterson and Cyndi and the day my whole life changed.

I was always the fat kid, the overweight teenager, the obese adult. I managed to loose weight, the unhealthy way for my wedding, and gained it all back just a few months after my wedding. Then I became pregnant with my first son and really let myself go. I was at the heaviest I had ever been in my life. Again I managed to lose a few pounds and convinced myself that I was ok, but I was so unhappy and unhealthy.

By the time I got pregnant with my second son I was already labeled morbidly obese by my doctors. My husband could not put his arms around my waist, I did not fit in the chairs at the AT&T center when we went to spurs games and I banned mirrors in my house because I could not stand the sight of the sad, fat, woman in the mirror.

It's amazing everything that your weight controls, like your happiness, your marriage, your relationship with your family, coworkers.

Marisa's Story I understand that I have been given a second chance at life. A second chance to make a difference in the life of my children, my family and my friends.

The decision to have the surgery was not the hard part — the hard part comes after the surgery, when you are making healthy choices and not falling back into old eating habits. Just because you lose the weight doesn't does lose the demons that drove you to make bad food choices.

I just want to leave this thought with those people who are still straddling the fence about weight loss surgery — I read a lot of blogs about people who had the surgery, and it seemed like all the blogs were bad. Some people had to have second surgeries and some, even a year after the surgery, had not been able to get their lives back.

The stories were grim and sad and scary. I brought this to Dr. Peterson's attention and told him my fears and his words to me were, 'The successful candidates don't have time to blog. They are out living their lives and being happy and productive. They don't have time to sit around and complain.'

It has taken me weeks to write this bio because I just haven't had time — I'm out living my life! I'm chasing my kids around and going out on dates with my husband of 10 years and training for a 5K in November!!
